Je Suis Australienne rofiles extraordinary Australian women who traveled to France between 1880 and 1945 and who formulated their impressions in fiction, diaries, letters, and autobiographies. The book explores how women adapted to new environments in a world of changing attitudes to feminine education, professionalism, and sexuality. Its sequential unfolding reveals Australian responses to key moments in French history – notably the Belle Epoque, World War I, the “roaring twenties,” the politically unstable 1930s, and World War II. Drawing from texts not readily available, Je Suis Australienne includes the narratives of a schoolgirl, an artist, novelists, nurses, and a secret agent.
